What is occupational health?

Each year, millions of workers in the UK are made ill because of their jobs and working environment.Occupational health is about keeping people well at work, both mentally and physically.

According to research, musculoskeletal problems, such as back pain, and mental health issues caused by work-related stress, are two of the biggest contributors to employee absence. In many cases, these health problems are avoidable, and employers can protect their staff, and their bottom line, by working with occupational health specialists. At FOHCUS, we offer an impartial service that works on behalf of both employer and employee to build healthier, happier workplaces through effective wellbeing solutions.

Why does my company need an occupational health service?

Your staff are a key business asset and essential to productivity and profitability. As an employer, you are required by law to prevent physical and mental ill health in your workers that may occur as a result of your business activities.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety, carries out targeted inspections and investigations to prevent workplace death, injury or ill health. The HSE will take enforcement action to prevent harm in the workplace and hold businesses who break the law to account. Robust occupational health practices keep your organisation legally compliant. They also help both employer and employee through what can be highly complex and emotive situations, and display to your workforce that your business is empathic and seeks to make adjustments for ill health.

Research shows that good health is good for business – and healthy workplaces have better financial results. The longer people are off sick, the less likely they are to make a successful return to work – and the cost of an absent workforce on the UK’s economy is estimated at £100bn each year.
